The next time that you go for a job interview – there is no reason to be nervous! When you are prepared for a job interview, the process seems to get easier and easier.

Use these tips on your next job interview:

    • Upon the invitation to the interview, learn everything that you can about the company including the background, motto and any values that the company adheres to. Learning everything that you can about the company will ensure that you can identify with the values that are demonstrated throughout the interview. This information can be used during the interview to demonstrate the good fit that you would make with the company.
    • Come prepared and ready to pay attention. It is important to arrive at least ten minutes ahead of the scheduled interview to demonstrate that you are punctual.
    • When introduced, greet the interviewer with a firm handshake and smile. Don’t sit down until the interviewer sits down first or offers you a seat. Maintain good eye contact through out the interview.
    • Body language can say more than words throughout the interview process. Keeping good posture with your legs or feet crossed over one another and avoiding fidgeting gestures with the hands that could lead to the interviewer mistaking this for nervousness are all behaviors that should be avoided.
    • When you are asked questions throughout the interview process it is important to avoid long pauses. Small pauses are fine and can be used with emphasis, but long pauses may indicate that the person being interviewed is unsure of what to say next. Mirror the actions and mannerisms of the interview as well as the tone in which they are speaking. When this occurs, you can ensure that the energy levels will begin to match which can create an instant rapport between the interviewer and the candidate for the job.
    • How long should you take to answer a question that has been posed by the job interviewer? Experts recommend that questions should be no more than one to two minutes for an answer to determine a concise and clear response. It is important to look for cues from the interviewer, such as boredom and fidgeting or other cues to determine whether the questions have been answered appropriately. Use the highlights of the story rather than going into great detail – this could lead to the question becoming off topic towards the answer.
    • Have answers prepared within your head to common questions like tell me about yourself, or the reason that you left your last job. Most employers ask standard questions such that ask the potential employer about their worst personality trait or something that they would change about their work habits. Be prepared to answer this question when it is posed by the employer. An answer should not contain negative aspects – if it does, it should contain positive answers combined with the negative.
  • After the interview it is important to thank the employer for their time. The interview can be followed up with a thank-you letter or phone call as a courtesy.
